Spring is picking up pace
Work continued on our hedge project this week. There was still straw to spread and some edging to finish, so we’re getting closer to having it all done. It’s exciting to see this project finally taking shape after all the planning and growing of plants along the way.
We also spent some time in the vegetable patch, pulling out the irrigation and mulching down the spelt crops. There isn’t much left to do before we can start preparing the beds for planting.
Spring certainly doesn’t leave us short of jobs!
The greenhouse is filling up nicely, and we’ll continue sowing for a while yet.
We want to make sure we have plenty of succession plantings coming along, rather than everything being ready at once.
Our first seedlings are now available, including spinach, beetroot, silverbeet and lettuce. It’s always nice to reach this point in the season, when the work we’ve been doing behind the scenes starts to become something others can take home and grow.
On Thursday, we welcomed a group from U3A Warrnambool. We had the opportunity to share a little of our journey and take everyone for a walk around the garden to see what we’re growing and working on.
We finished the afternoon with coffee, cake and some interesting conversations. It was lovely to have people here who were keen to hear more about what we do.
There has also been quite a bit of discussion in the media lately about residues in vegetables and berries. It’s a topic that certainly gets people talking.
For us, choosing a spray-free and organic approach wherever possible has been part of our journey for a long time. It’s not always the easiest path, but it’s one we believe in, and conversations like these encourage us to keep doing what we’re doing.
Having spray-free fruit available as well makes things even more interesting. We’re always looking for ways to offer people good food and more choice while staying true to our values.
Spring is definitely picking up pace, both in the garden and at the Barn. There are more visitors, more bookings and plenty of things happening over the coming weeks.
