New Chicks and Spring Planting
We finished the week with a busy Saturday at the Barn, serving brunch, lunch and our Patch to Plate Dinner. It’s lovely to see the Barn being enjoyed throughout the day, with plenty happening from morning through to evening.
On Sunday, we were invited to visit the new Twelve Apostles precinct with friends and family. It’s a massive building, and certainly something different architecturally.
It’s hard to imagine just how busy it will become once thousands of visitors start passing through every day. We were fortunate to have a private tour guide and the opportunity to look around while everything was still quiet. It was a great chance to see the place before the crowds arrive.
During the week, we also picked up some day-old chicks. At the moment, we’re busy looking after them and helping them through the first days of their lives. It’s a job in itself, making sure they’re warm, settled and getting everything they need. They may be tiny, but they certainly require plenty of attention!
Meanwhile, spring planting is well underway. Our first lot of vegetables is in the ground, including the onions, and the snow peas are already poking their heads through the soil. It’s always encouraging to see those first signs of growth.
While the plants are going into the garden, there’s still plenty happening in the greenhouse, with pricking out seedlings and sowing more for the weeks ahead. We want to keep the succession plantings going so there’s a steady supply coming along.
And, of course, the weeds have decided that spring is the perfect time to go into overdrive. They seem to be growing on steroids at the moment! We’ve started chasing them before they develop seed heads, because the last thing we need is for them to spread even further.
There’s never a shortage of jobs at this time of year. Between the Barn, the chicks, the greenhouse and the vegetable patch, spring certainly keeps us moving!
