A new financial year, a new milk processor, and the shortest day now behind us — it feels like we’re stepping into a fresh season with plenty to look forward to.
One of those things is a little holiday in August. More details on that another time!
The week began with finalising the financials, followed by something we don’t do nearly often enough — taking a day off.
I managed to coax my husband into Warrnambool while one of our vehicles was being serviced, and we spent a couple hours relaxing at the Deep Blue Hot Springs.
It was the perfect way to fill a cold, grey winter’s day and a good reminder that sometimes slowing down is just as important as keeping busy.
Between the passing rain showers, I finally managed to plant out a garden bed beneath our beautiful old pine tree. The plants had been patiently waiting in pots for almost two months, waiting for the right conditions. It’s always satisfying to see a long-awaited job finally completed, and I’m looking forward to watching everything establish and grow.
Better still, it’s a view I’ll enjoy every day from the barn kitchen window.
Speaking of the barn kitchen, it was well overdue for a deep clean. It’s one of those jobs that’s easy to put off when life gets busy, but once it was finished, it felt like a fresh start in itself.
Today’s vegetable picking certainly wasn’t the highlight of the week. Wet weather gear was essential, and thankfully Gemma took on the task while the kitchen became a rather inviting place to hide from the rain.
What’s happening at the Barn

Becoming More Self-Sufficient
Our six-module workshop series begins at the end of August, with classes running at the Barn, Warrnambool and Colac.
A new financial year often feels like turning a page. There are always plenty of jobs waiting, but there are also new opportunities, fresh ideas, and another season to embrace.
We’re looking forward to seeing where it leads.
